WHAT IS RED TEAMING?
All planning and decision-making is vulnerable to a large number of common cognitive pitfalls, including unchallenged assumptions, confirmation bias, groupthink and deeply ingrained mind-sets, all of which increase the chances of flawed judgements and mistaken forecasts.
Red Teaming, which is part of the ‘Alternative Analysis’ family of structured analytical techniques, is a process that has been carefully developed by the military and intelligence communities with the purpose of reducing risk, improving planning, and increasing opportunities through rigorous analysis. These structured analytical techniques are conducted in a systematic and transparent manner so that they can be shared, built on, and easily critiqued by others. The transfer of these techniques to the business world has proven hugely beneficial when they are employed by properly trained, educated and practiced individuals.
There are many facets to Red Teaming. Today, Red Teams are used to double check important assumptions and overcome groupthink. Red Teaming is used by government departments such as the UK’s Department of Works and Pensions, which uses Red Teaming to assess welfare reforms. All major Intelligence Agencies now rely on this methodology. For example, the CIA used a Red Team to challenge both the intelligence and plan for the attack on Osama bin Laden in Pakistan.
We at Fighting |Edge believe Red Teaming is now mature enough to become a vital part of the modern business's toolset.

We employ Red Teaming within an adaptable, flexible and synergistic framework split into three complimentary, overlapping phases. The Creative Phase is used to develop thinking and examine alternatives, while the Testing Phase subjects all proposed ideas to rigorous testing and scrutiny.
